Pampering a Senior Cat

April 1, 2020
Karl, Kitty in Chief

Hello. Karl here. I’m taking a break from my busy schedule of supervising the staff here at the clinic to talk about senior cat care. Is your cat aged nine or older? If so, your pet is technically a senior … even if she still thinks of herself as a kitten. Cats are fairly independent, so you won’t need to make major changes to your furball’s care regimen as she ages. However, your kitty will appreciate some extra TLC. My Ontonagon County, MI vet let me discuss pampering an older feline below.

Diet

Senior cats are at high risk of obesity. Ask your vet for specific nutritional advice, including portion sizes and tips on changing to a senior-formula food. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard.

Playtime

Fluffy won’t be as frisky as she once was, and she’ll probably be more interested in chasing Z’s than chasing mice. However, daily play sessions benefit us both physically and mentally. Think of it as a kitty equivalent of taking a morning walk and then doing a crossword puzzle.

Facilities

Fluffy may have trouble getting in and out of a litterbox with high walls. Look for a litterbox made just for senior cats.

Kitty Luxuries

Small touches can help keep your feline buddy happy and purring. Offer your kitty lots of comfy napping spots. These should be easy for her to reach, as she won’t be able to jump as high as she once did. Fluffy will also appreciate small comforts. Leave a light on for her after dark, and offer her a comfy window seat with a good view. Boxes and toys will also keep your furball content.

Veterinary Care

Many of my feline companions prefer taking a nap over another dreaded car ride. However, your pet will be much healthier with proper care. Keep up with your kitty’s veterinary ap pointments! I  recommend annual bloodwork and semi annual exams for senior felines. And do my a favor, make sure you ask to have those kidneys checked.

Grooming

Older cats may have difficulty grooming themselves. Brush her gently at least a few times a week. This will remove mats and dead hair from her coat, help her circulation, and hopefully get that motor going.

Love

Make sure Fluffy feels secure and cared for. Spend time with her every day, and let her snooze on your lap sometimes. Senior cat purrs are truly precious!
