Does your canine buddy come running when he thinks he’s getting a snack? If so, he is in good company! Few things get that cute tail going like the thought of a tasty treat! While Fido will always appreciate store-bought goodies, you can give him something different from time to time. Read on as a local Ontonagon, MI vet lists some great cold treats for your furry pal.
Ice cream is definitely pretty high on our list of summertime faves. You can find ice cream for Fido in many pet stores and supermarkets. You can also make your own! For a base, you can use organic peanut butter; pureed pumpkin, squash, or sweet potato; ripe bananas; plain yogurt; organic gravy; sodium-free broth; or pureed meat. Then, for toppings, you can add bacon bits, cheese, egg, shredded meat, kibble, dog treats, strawberries, or blueberries. Experiment a bit, and see what your pet likes best.
This one will definitely get Fido’s tail wagging. Put some crushed-up doggy treats, kibble, or cooked meat, fish, or poultry into ice cube trays. Or, put chew sticks into waxed paper cups. Then, pour water or sodium-free broth in, and freeze overnight.
Another thing you can do is dribble sodium-free broth or organic gravy over some shaved ice. You can also add bacon bits, shredded cheese, or canned chicken or beef if you like.
Combine some of Fido’s food with ice in a blender, and give it to him that way as a snack. This is a great way to help your cute pet beat the heat.
Buy a precooked roll of chicken, hamburger, or sausage, and keep it in the freezer. Slice off a piece for your pup on hot days. Instant tail wags!
Watermelon is a delicious summer treat. Just be sure to remove the seeds before giving any to your pet.
These are a few recipe options. You can also make your own! Just be sure to stick with safe foods. Never give your pup anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; nuts; mushrooms; caffeine; or xylitol. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as is raw meat, dough, or yeast.
